Boards & Commissions
The following are the boards and commissions of the City of Sterling. For additional information on any of these boards, please contact City Hall at 815-632-6621.

There may not be a vacancy in the board you are interested in, however, your information will be kept on file for future reference if a vacancy does arise.
Building Code Board of Appeals
The Building Code Board of Appeals hears all appeals of orders, decisions or determinations made by the Building Official relative to the application and interpretation of the Building Code.
Electrical Commission
The Electrical Commission hears all appeals of orders, decisions or determinations made by the Electrical Inspector relative to the application and interpretation of the Electrical Code.
Fire Department Foreign Insurance Tax Board
The Fire Department Foreign Insurance Tax Board uses funds collected by the state to enhance the Fire Department needs through the purchase of equipment.
Fire & Police Commission
The Fire and Police Commission is charged with making rules to govern the appointment or hiring of police officers and firefighters, the promotion of police officers and firefighters and the removal or discharge of police officers or firefighters.
Firefighters Pension Board
The Firemen's Pension Fund Board of Trustees is composed of five members, each serving a three-year term. This Board meets quarterly (four times each year).
Historical Preservation Commission
The Historical Preservation Commission is composed of five members, each serving a three year staggered term. This Commission holds meetings at regularly scheduled times by resolution of the Commission (with a minimum of four meetings held per year).
Hospital Board
The Hospital Board shall have supervision over the CGH Medical Center, the public hospital in and for the City, and shall function as provided by law.
Library Board
The Library Board shall have control of the public library of the City and shall be responsible to the Mayor for the proper management of such library.
Liquor Commission
The Liquor Commission Board hears violations of the Liquor Code and establishes rules and regulations pertaining to liquor.
Mayor and Council
The City of Sterling is led by the Mayor and six Aldermen.
Mechanical Board
The Mechanical Board hears all appeals of orders, decisions or determinations made by the Building Official relative to the application and interpretation of the Mechanical Code.
Mural Commission
The Mural Commission shall review all applications for a permit to paint murals.
Municipal Band
The Municipal Band Commission exists to conduct and maintain a municipal band or programs in the performing arts.
Planning Commission
Gather information about the Planning Commission such as meeting times, membership, and responsibilities.
Plumbing Board of Appeals
This board hears all appeals of orders, decisions or determinations made by the Plumbing Inspector relative to the application and interpretation of the Plumbing Code
Police Pension Board
The Board of Trustees of the Sterling Police Pension Fund is charged with controlling the fund, managing the assets of the fund, subpoenaing witnesses, enforcing contributions, hearing and determining applications for benefits, making rules, paying expenses, investing funds, and keeping records
Property Maintenance Code Appeals Board
This board hears all appeals of orders, decisions or determinations made by the Building Official relative to the application and interpretation of the Property Maintenance Code.
Sterling Industrial Development Commission
This Commission will provide guidance, direction and control for the further industrial development of the city and territory beyond the corporate limits not included in any other municipality.
Stormwater & Erosion Control Appeals Board
This board hears all appeals of orders, decisions or determinations made by the Building Official relative to the application and interpretation of the Stormwater and Erosion Control Ordinance.
TIF Joint Review Board
TIF stands for Tax Increment Financing. The Board is comprised of local taxing bodies to make a joint investment in the development or redevelopment of an area, with the intent that any short term gains be reinvested and leveraged so that all the taxing bodies will receive larger financial gains in the future.
Tree Board
In working with the City, it shall be the responsibility of the City Tree Board to study, investigate, council, develop and/or update annually, and administer a written plan for the care, preservation, pruning, planting, replanting, removal or disposition of trees and shrubs in City parks, along streets and in other public areas.
Zoning Board of Appeals
The Zoning Board of Appeals hears all appeals of orders, decisions or determinations made by the Zoning Official relative to the application and interpretation of the Zoning Code
